The Grammar of Things

What does an object actually show, before anyone tells you what it is?

Museums catalog archaeological objects starting from the label: who made it, where, when. When the paperwork is thin, the label can get ahead of the evidence. The Grammar of Things looks first. It reads a photograph of the object with the catalog claim held back, scores what it sees against 29 visual principles, and only then compares that with what the record says.

Every sentence it writes is tagged by how it knows: direct observation, interpretation or scholarly consensus. You can see which parts are looking and which parts are guessing.

Built for Southwest collections and the IMLS National Leadership Grants for Museums. My own project, designed and built from scratch.
